Agriculture
in Africa still has substantial
production reserves. A sustainable intensification of agriculture is the key to poverty reduction with a broad impact in Africa. The concept of contract farming offers the out growers an
access to the market (solving the sales problem) and to affordable technical assistance. It promotes professional, sustainable cultivation procedures (sound agricultural practices) and frequently contributes to
risk diversification, e.g. by introducing crop rotation in cotton cultivation or the cultivation of mixed cultures like coffee/cocoa under coconut palm trees.
Support of a consultant is needed to conduct a pre-feasibility study for the establishment and management of a pan-African fund aiming to promote outgrower schemes.
He / She should have a look at the project examples of Grelles/SIAT (Ghana), Eseka (Cameroon), Illovo (Zambia), wheat/corn + coffee (Kenya), possible cocoa (Côte d'Ivoire), assess the plausibility of the concept together with local players and banks as well as pan-African players in the agribusiness sector in all countries and correspondingly adjust the concept.
